About Aklat-taan

In consonance with the thrust of the University of providing an environment which will enable the attainment of academic excellence in teaching, research, and public service; the University Library takes the UP Diliman Community to another height.

Aklat-taan is the Learning Spaces Reservation App of the University Library. Custom-developed by its pool of homegrown talents, the University Library has yet again instituted a better way of addressing the norms of the emerging post-COVID reality and efficiently managing its spaces with the best interest of library users in mind.

Prior to its development, prospective clients must call or personally visit the library to reserve selected library spaces. During times of peak user volume such as exam weeks, searching for available library space at the Reading Areas can become a challenge in itself. Many students found themselves waiting in the Lobby or sitting on the cold floor with the bookshelf at their back. Others may be studying until midnight at the Main Library or staying overnight until the next morning at the Study Nook of the College of Science Library. It is in the myriad of these strenuous scenarios where the Aklat-taan app comes in: to show where in the 493-hectare Diliman campus are the available library learning spaces; and to let library users stake their claim on the said space: first click, first reserve.

As the UP Diliman Community is not yet fully open, access to the beta version of the Aklat-taan app and Main Library Reading Areas are limited to currently enrolled UP students, faculty, and staff. Through its single sign-on capability, library users can reserve their preferred space for two hours at a time subject to compliance with the established entry requirements.

Aklat-taan is a portmanteau from the Filipino words aklatan, meaning library, and taan which means “pag-uukol” or to reserve. Thus, conveying the denotation of reserving the library. Its logo depicts an open book, which represents the core resource of the library, with the silhouette of the Oblation on one page and a calendar on the other. Its word mark, AKLAT-TAAN: Request Reserve Access, encapsulates the process which should lead library users to the most important act of obtaining trustworthy information. All the said elements are immersed in the colors Maroon, Green, and Yellow to convey the sense of being UP.

With the development of the Aklat-taan, the University Library once again gives breath to its thrust of user-centered services and its vision of being an information environment where users can collaborate, discover, and create knowledge.
